Caprese Prosciutto Panini with Ciabatta or Campagne
Introduction
The Caprese Prosciutto Panini is a pressed Italian sandwich layered with fresh mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, basil, and savory prosciutto. Inspired by the classic Caprese salad originating from the island of Capri, this panini is a perfect marriage of bold flavors and satisfying textures. The term “panini” simply means sandwiches in Italian, but what makes it unique is the grilled and pressed preparation that brings everything together with a crispy finish.
This recipe recreates a memorable bite I had with my Italian friends Simone and Ruben at a cozy café. It’s more than just a sandwich. It’s a sensory experience that blends casual comfort with a touch of elegance. You’ll learn how to layer ingredients for visual contrast, how to get the perfect crisp on your bread, and why the order of assembly really matters.
Ingredients
- 2 ciabatta rolls or 4 slices of campagne bread
- 40 to 60g prosciutto (about 20 to 30g per serving)
- 80g fresh mozzarella (sliced or shredded)
- 4 to 6 slices of ripe tomato
- 6 to 8 fresh basil leaves
- Olive oil (for grilling and optional drizzling)
- Freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
Step 1: Slice the bread Cut your ciabatta or campagne in half. Make sure the bread is long and easy to layer.
Step 2: Add the layers Drizzle a bit of olive oil on the inner side of the bread. Layer tomato slices, basil leaves, mozzarella, and finally prosciutto. Add black pepper and top with the other bread slice.
Step 3: Grill the sandwich Add olive oil to a grill pan and cook the sandwich until it becomes crispy with visible grill marks. If you’re using a skillet, press it down with a weight for better texture.
Step 4: Finish and slice Once the cheese has melted and the outside is golden and crisp, it’s done. Slice the sandwich in half and optionally top with torn basil for added aroma.
Step 5: Serve Serve hot, ideally with a fresh salad or even a glass of wine for a more indulgent morning.
Tips
- Use ciabatta for a light, airy crunch or campagne for a more robust bite
- Layer tomato first to help moisten the sandwich naturally
- Grilling with pressure improves texture and helps fuse the flavors
- Add basil after grilling for a burst of color and freshness
