Not Just Survival: Why Space Food Is Made with Love
Introduction
Did you know that Japan has developed over 50 types of certified space food? From miso soup to onigiri, these meals go far beyond basic nutrition. In fact, they are crafted with comfort, culture, and care in mind, designed to help astronauts feel human even in zero gravity.
In this post, we will dive into two unique items from JAXA certified space food: salmon and red bean onigiri, and simmered miso stew. You will learn how they are prepared, what they actually taste like, and what they can teach us about food, identity, and connection.
I made this video because I believe food is more than survival. It brings people together, even across the vast silence of space.
Ingredients
Here is what came in the set I tried:
• Japanese Space Onigiri (Red Bean and Salmon flavor)
• Japanese Miso Stew (Retort pouch, JAXA certified)
• Hot water (for rehydration or heating)
• Optional: Plate or bowl for serving
🛒 I got the full 5 item set that includes curry, rice, miso chicken, and two kinds of onigiri.

Instructions
Rehydrate the Onigiri
Pour hot water into the container, up to the indicated line. Let it sit for about 15 to 20 minutes. Once ready, peel open the container and the rice will have formed into a triangle on its own.
Heat the Miso Stew
Boil water and place the sealed retort pouch in for a few minutes. No additional preparation needed.
Plate and Observe
Serve the onigiri and miso stew on separate plates, or keep them in their original packaging for a more authentic space experience.
Taste Test
Try each item and take note of the texture, saltiness, and flavor. Which one surprised you most?
Reflect
Think about what makes these meals comforting. Would you eat them if you were far from Earth?
Taste & Impressions
• The salmon onigiri was very soft, slightly too moist. A sheet of seaweed might help improve texture.
• The red bean rice held up better, but both were mild in flavor.
• The miso stew was surprisingly rich and familiar. Soft veggies, a boiled egg, and konjac gave it a true home cooked feel.
• These meals are designed for more than nutrition. They provide emotional comfort in space.
